Canadian Staple Grocery Prices: Weekly Price Tracker

Updated October 19, 2026. Updated weekly.

This page tracks a fixed basket of 14 staple groceries in British Columbia. Same items, same sizes, checked every week, so the changes you see are real price changes and not a different basket. Prices below are regular online list prices at Real Canadian Superstore checked on October 19, 2026, plus every price for these items we could verify at other BC stores the same day.

Online list prices can differ from the shelf price at your local store, and prices vary by region. Treat this as a BC benchmark, and check your own receipts against it.

Prices we verified at other stores

Save-On-Foods lists most prices per store, and only some are public online. The cheddar we could verify on October 19 was a premium block: Balderson medium cheddar, 280 g, on sale for $11.06 (regular $12.29). That works out to $3.95 per 100 g, compared with $1.50 per 100 g for the No Name 400 g block at Superstore. Brand and size differ, so compare per 100 g, not per package.

Save-On-Foods flyer prices for the week of October 15 to 21, 2026: lean ground beef value pack at $6.49 per pound, Value Priced medium roast coffee 864 g at $15.99, and Western Family pasta 900 g at 2 for $6. Flyer prices are sale prices for that week only, not regular prices.

Walmart Canada: walmart.ca blocks automated price reading, so we could not verify Walmart's regular online prices on October 19. Its flyer for October 15 to 21 lists Gay Lea butter 454 g at $4.97 and Folgers ground coffee at $15.97. We will add Walmart regular prices to this tracker as soon as we can verify them in a live check, and we will not publish a Walmart price we have not seen.

Same item, different price this week

Milk: the regular 4 L price we tracked at Superstore is $6.44, but Superstore's own flyer this week has Neilson Trutaste 4 L at $4.98. Same store, same week, $1.46 apart depending on which jug you grab.

Butter: $5.99 regular at Superstore for the 454 g store brand block. Walmart's flyer has Gay Lea 454 g at $4.97. Butter freezes well, so a flyer price under $5 is the week to buy two.

Lean ground beef: $8.49 per pound regular at Superstore. Save-On-Foods' flyer has its value pack at $6.49 per pound, a saving of $2 per pound, or about $4.41 on a kilogram.

Coffee: all three stores land within two cents of each other this week. No Name 907 g is $15.99 regular at Superstore, Save-On-Foods' flyer coffee (864 g) is $15.99, and Walmart's flyer Folgers is $15.97. When coffee is the same price everywhere, buy it wherever you already shop and save the trip.

How we collect these prices

Prices checked Monday, October 19, 2026, from retailer online listings (realcanadiansuperstore.ca, saveonfoods.com) and current flyer listings for the October 15 to 21, 2026 flyer week (FlyerCA, CaFlyers, WeeklyAdHunters, SmartCanucks). Regular prices are the retailer's online list price on the check date. Anything marked as a flyer price or sale price is labelled as such and expires with that flyer.

The basket never changes size or item to make a week look better. If an item is out of stock or a price cannot be verified, we say so on this page rather than filling the gap.

National context: Statistics Canada reported food purchased from stores up 1.7% year over year in September 2026. This tracker shows the shelf-level version of that story for BC.
