How Much Does Milk Cost in the US?
Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a gallon of whole milk cost $2.99 at Target (Good & Gather), $3.39 at Dillons, a Kroger banner, and $3.86 at H-E-B for its main brand gallon, with H-E-B's Hill Country Fare gallon listed at $3.46. All checked on retailer online listings.
The BLS national average price for a gallon of whole milk was $4.11 in September 2026, above every regular price we verified. Milk is the classic loss leader: stores price it to pull you in, so the spread between stores is wider than for almost any other staple.
The prices we verified
Target, Good & Gather whole milk, 1 gallon: $2.99 (regular online list price, October 19, 2026). Dillons (Kroger banner), Kroger whole milk, 1 gallon: $3.39 regular. H-E-B whole milk, 1 gallon: $3.86, with the Hill Country Fare gallon at $3.46.
Ad prices beat them all this week: Kroger's ad for October 14 to 20, 2026 listed gallon milk at $2.49, limit 5, for Saturday to Monday in the Southeast region, and Fred Meyer (also Kroger) listed gallons at $2.79, limit 2, for the same weekend window. We could not verify a current Walmart gallon price: the listings we found conflicted with each other, so we do not publish one.
What is a good deal on milk?
Our guidance: at or below $2.75 a gallon is a deal worth planning a trip around if milk is a big line in your budget, and $2.99 to $3.39 is a fair everyday range at the stores we track. Above $3.86, you are paying the top of the current range.
Milk does not freeze as gracefully as butter, so stock-up logic is limited to what your household drinks in about two weeks. The savings move with milk is store choice, not volume.
Why milk prices move
The BLS milk index rose 2.3% year over year in September 2026 but fell 2.0% in September itself, one of the drivers of the month's small grocery decline. The wider dairy index fell 0.7% year over year, and the USDA forecasts dairy prices nearly flat for 2026, up just 0.1%.
Most of the variation you see is retail strategy, not farm prices: milk is the item stores most often price at or below cost in ads, which is why the same gallon can be $2.49 on a weekend ad and $3.86 at regular price in the same week.
How to pay less for milk
Know your store's regular gallon price and the ad rotation. Kroger banners run weekend gallon deals often enough that a Kroger household can time most milk purchases to them.
Do not assume the biggest store wins. In our October 19 check, Target's regular gallon beat both Kroger's regular banner price and H-E-B's main brand price, and only the weekend ad beat Target.
Check milk against our weekly tracker before you shop. We reprice this item every week, and it is the item most likely to justify switching that week's trip.
