Australia Staple Grocery Prices: Weekly Price Tracker
Updated October 19, 2026. Updated weekly.
This page tracks a fixed basket of 14 staple groceries in Australia: milk, eggs, butter, bread, chicken breast, beef mince, rice, potatoes, bananas, coffee, cheddar, yoghurt, spaghetti, and onions. Same items, same sizes, checked every week, so the changes you see are real price changes and not a different basket.
Two sourcing layers are used and always labeled. Prices marked as checked October 19, 2026 come from coles.com.au listings opened that day. Woolworths blocks direct outside checking of its product pages, so the Coles and Woolworths comparison lines come from the Savings.com.au Grocery Price Index, September 2026 readings, labeled as tracker prices wherever they appear. Specials are never mixed into regular prices.

The basket at Coles and Woolworths, latest tracker readings
The lines below are from the Savings.com.au Grocery Price Index, September 2026 readings (regular prices, both chains). They are the most recent like-for-like readings available for Woolworths, which does not expose its prices to direct checking.
Full-cream milk 2L: Coles $3.40, Woolworths $3.40. Both chains, and Aldi, cut private-label milk in September 2026 to $1.75 for 1L, $3.40 for 2L and $4.95 for 3L, as reported by the Milk Value Portal on 24 September 2026.
Free range eggs, large 12 pack: Coles $6.40, Woolworths $6.40. Note the Coles figure has since moved to $6.60 in today's direct check above.
Unsalted butter 250g: Coles $4.50, Woolworths $4.50. The tracker reads the unsalted block; the salted 250g reading was not published.
White bread loaf (tracked at 650g, the standard Coles and Woolworths house loaf size): Coles $2.50, Woolworths $2.50.
Long-grain white rice 1kg: Coles $1.80, Woolworths $1.80. An independent weekly index for the week of October 16, 2026 also found long-grain rice cheapest at Coles at $1.80.
Pasta 500g (tracked as spirals): Coles $1.00, Woolworths $1.00.
Instant coffee 200g: Coles $6.50, Woolworths $6.50. The tracker reads instant; ground coffee is the gap, as noted above.
Tasty cheese slices 500g: Coles $8.00, Woolworths $7.50. Slices are the tracked format; the Coles block price verified today is $6.80 for 500g, cheaper per kilo than either slices line.
Chicken breast, free range, per kg: Coles $12.50, Woolworths $12.00. This week's catalogue specials undercut both by a wide margin; see the specials watch.
Beef mince 500g (regular, 17 to 18% fat class): Coles $7.70, Woolworths $7.70, matching today's direct Coles special listing for the 500g pack.
Bananas, per kg: Coles $4.90, Woolworths $5.06.

On these 13 lines, counting chicken and bananas at 1kg each, Coles totals $70.20 and Woolworths totals $69.36. Ten lines are tied exactly. The full head-to-head is in our store comparison, linked below.
What we could not verify
Woolworths shelf prices for today: woolworths.com.au product pages could not be opened in this check, so every Woolworths regular price here is a September 2026 tracker reading or a current catalogue special, labeled as such. A stale Woolworths delivery-storefront listing showing 3L milk at $5.75 conflicts with the September price cut and was not used.
Aldi shelf prices: aldi.com.au does not publish checkable prices. A third-party comparison updated in early October 2026 (thecostofliving.com.au) found Aldi cheaper on cheese, yoghurt, butter, eggs, mince and pasta against both majors, and a weekly index for the week of October 16 put Aldi's 15-staple basket lowest of the four chains it tracks. Those are other publications' observations, labeled as such wherever we mention them.
Missing basket lines at regular prices: a 700g white loaf (both majors' house loaves are 650g), spaghetti specifically (the tracker reads spirals), a salted 250g butter at Coles directly, and standard ground coffee anywhere.
How we collect these prices
Direct prices checked Monday, October 19, 2026 on coles.com.au. Tracker readings are the Savings.com.au Grocery Price Index, September 2026 update, cross-checked against the Cuugo weekly index for the week of October 16, 2026 and the Milk Value Portal's September 2026 milk report. Specials come from the current catalogue week, Wednesday 14 to Tuesday 20 October 2026, and live in the specials watch, not in the regular basket.
The basket never changes size or item to make a week look better. If an item cannot be verified, we say so on this page.
National context: the ABS food and non-alcoholic beverages index rose 3.0% year over year in August 2026. This tracker shows the shelf-level version of that story.
