Grocery Prices in Australia: Tracker, Reports & What Things Cost
This page is the home of our Australian grocery price coverage. Everything here is built from Australian sources: the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Consumer Price Index, Coles and Woolworths listings and catalogues, and published price trackers, with every source labeled.
The latest headline: ABS food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 3.0% in the 12 months to August 2026. Beef and lamb are the pressure point, both up 9.4%, while eggs, down 1.9%, are the only food class cheaper than a year ago. The September 2026 CPI, including the September quarter, is published on 28 October 2026.
Our first Australian basket check, built from a published September 2026 price tracker, priced 13 shared staples at $70.20 at Coles and $69.36 at Woolworths, a gap of just 84 cents. Ten of the 13 lines were priced identically. The full tracker explains the basket and the Coles prices we verified directly on October 19.
Start here: the tracker and the monthly report
The Australia Staple Grocery Prices tracker is the living page: a fixed basket of 14 staples checked every week, with regular prices and specials kept clearly separate. The Australia Grocery Price Report is the monthly companion: each ABS release explained item by item.
The August 2026 report covers the red meat spike (beef and veal up 9.4%, lamb and goat up 9.4%), milk up 5.3% on the year even as supermarkets cut shelf prices in September, and eggs as the only falling staple.
What individual staples cost
Each staple has its own guide with the prices we verified, what counts as a good deal, why the price moves, and how to pay less: eggs, milk, butter, bread, chicken, beef mince, coffee, bananas, cheese, and potatoes. Every guide is linked below.
Specials and store comparisons
Australia Supermarket Specials Watch rounds up the best verified half-price and major specials in the current Coles and Woolworths catalogue week, with stock-up or skip verdicts. The store comparison prices the same 13 staples at Coles and Woolworths and reports honestly how the Woolworths prices were sourced.
We also publish Canada, United States and UK hubs built on the same system, and a same-basket comparison across all four countries.
How we check Australian prices
Coles prices marked as checked on October 19, 2026 come from coles.com.au listings. Woolworths blocks direct outside checking of its product pages, so Woolworths shelf prices here come from a published price tracker's September 2026 readings and current catalogue reproductions, always labeled with their source and date. We never blend the two without saying so.
If a price cannot be verified, we say so on the page. This week that included a standard 200g ground coffee at either chain and any shelf price at all from aldi.com.au, which does not publish checkable prices.
