How Much Do Bananas Cost in Australia?
Short answer: bananas cost $4.90 a kilo at Coles and $5.06 a kilo at Woolworths, on the latest published tracker readings (Savings.com.au, September 2026).
If those numbers look startling next to our other country guides, they are real, and there is a structural reason: Australia grows its own bananas behind strict biosecurity rules and effectively does not import them. The price is a policy outcome as much as a market one.
The prices we verified
Bananas, per kg: Coles $4.90, Woolworths $5.06 (Savings.com.au tracker, September 2026 readings). Woolworths is the more expensive of the two on this line, one of the few lines in the basket where the chains differ.
For scale, from our other country trackers this month: bananas are 90p a kilo in the UK and US shoppers pay roughly a third of the Australian per-kilo price. Our around-the-world comparison, linked from the hub, puts the four countries side by side in one currency.
What is a good deal on bananas?
Our guidance: at or below $4.50/kg is a good Australian price, and banana specials are uncommon because supply is domestic and steady. Lady Finger and specialty varieties price above the Cavendish rate and should be judged as different products.
The real banana leak is waste, not price. Bananas bought for the week and thrown out at the brown end cost double. Buy fewer, more often, or freeze the surplus for smoothies and baking.
Why banana prices move
Bananas sit in the ABS fruit class, up 3.5% in the year to August 2026, within fruit and vegetables at 2.0%. Fruit fell 2.1% in August itself, the seasonal pattern.
The tail risk is weather: a single cyclone through the North Queensland growing region can spike banana prices nationally for months, as Australians who remember past spikes know. In normal years, the price is one of the steadiest in the store.
How to pay less for bananas
Buy the standard Cavendish at the per-kilo rate and treat specialty varieties as an upgrade, not a default.
Match quantity to your real consumption. At roughly $5.00 a kilo, bananas are too expensive in Australia to throw away.
Check bananas against our weekly tracker. A weather-driven spike will show here first.
At $5 a kilo, bananas deserve a line in the budget, not a shrug. Track what you actually pay per item with free receipt scans (5 a month, no credit card), and Premium flags the movers.
