How Much Do Bananas Cost in the US?

Short answer: on October 19, 2026, bananas cost $0.36 a pound at H-E-B and $0.50 a pound at Walmart, checked on the retailers' online listings. A third-party in-store price check by FinanceBuzz in mid-October 2026 found Aldi bananas at $0.49 a pound.

Target does not sell bananas by the pound online: it charges $0.29 per banana. That pricing style makes bananas the one item in our basket where two stores cannot be compared without a scale, so this guide does the conversion honestly and flags where it cannot be done.

The prices we verified

H-E-B, fresh bananas: $0.36 a pound (listed as $0.86 for an average bunch of about 2.4 lb). Walmart, fresh bananas: $0.50 a pound, listed per piece at an estimated $0.20 each. Kroger's per-pound banana price could only be found through its Instacart storefront at $0.59 a pound, an Instacart-listed price rather than a Kroger-published one.

Target, Good & Gather bananas: $0.29 each. A typical banana weighs about a third of a pound, which would make $0.29 each roughly $0.87 a pound, well above the per-pound stores. But banana sizes vary enough that we report the per-piece price as Target states it and do not fold it into per-pound totals.

What is a good deal on bananas?

Our guidance: at or below $0.45 a pound is a good banana price in the current market, and at or below $0.40 is excellent. Bananas are priced to look cheap everywhere, so the realistic spread is about $0.36 to $0.59 a pound depending on store and channel.

Per-piece pricing flips the logic: small bananas become the deal and large bananas the rip-off. If your store prices per piece, the heaviest bunch is the best value in the display.

Why banana prices move

The BLS banana index fell 0.8% year over year in September 2026 and rose 1.0% in September itself, making bananas one of the calmest prices in produce. The wider fresh fruit index rose 4.9% year over year, driven by other fruit, and the USDA forecasts fresh fruit up 2.5% across 2026.

Bananas are imported year-round from a stable set of growing regions and sold as a traffic item, so stores keep the price steady and absorb small cost moves. Sustained banana price jumps usually signal a supply problem in Central or South America, not ordinary inflation.

How to pay less for bananas

Compare per pound wherever the store allows it, and convert per-piece prices by the bunch: weigh the bunch in the produce scale before deciding a per-piece store is cheaper.

Buy at two ripeness levels: a ready bunch for now and a greener bunch for later in the week. It cuts the waste that quietly makes the cheapest bananas expensive.

Check bananas against our weekly tracker. The per-pound spread between stores this week was $0.14, which on a family-sized habit is a few dollars a month for one habit change.

Bananas are bought so often that a 14 cent per pound gap becomes a habit-sized number. Track what you actually pay per item with free receipt scans, and Premium will flag when your regular items change price.
