How Much Does Bread Cost in Australia?
Short answer: a house-brand white sandwich loaf costs $2.50 at both Coles and Woolworths, on the latest published tracker readings (Savings.com.au, September 2026). The tracked loaf is 650g: both majors' standard house loaves are 650g, even though 700g is the traditional Australian sandwich size.
Bread is a tied price in Australia, like milk. The decision that matters is not where you buy it but which tier and size you default to.
The prices we verified
White bread loaf, tracked per 650g: Coles $2.50, Woolworths $2.50, September 2026 tracker readings. A direct Coles price for a 700g house loaf could not be verified on October 19, 2026, because the Coles house loaf is a 650g product; we publish the tracked size and say so.
Per kilo, the $2.50 loaf works out at about $3.85/kg. Branded and bakery-style loaves in both chains run well above that rate, and sourdough formats can double it. Those premium lines are priced as bakery products, not staples, and we treat them that way.
What is a good deal on bread?
Our guidance: $2.50 for the house loaf is the going rate, and bread specials at the majors usually take the form of branded loaf promotions rather than house-brand cuts. A branded loaf at or below $3.00 on special is the point where the upgrade becomes cheap.
The structural saving is the freezer: a loaf bought at full price and half wasted costs double per eaten slice. The second half of the loaf, frozen on day one, is the cheapest bread in this guide.
Why bread prices move
Bread sits in the ABS bread and cereal products class. The August 2026 rate for that class was not in the ABS food detail available to us, so we do not quote one here; the food group overall rose 3.0% year over year. When the ABS detail publishes, this guide will carry the class rate.
Wheat and energy costs drive bread over time, and the house loaf price tends to move in steps, held flat for months then reset. The $2.50 tie at both chains is one of those flat periods.
How to pay less for bread
Default to the house loaf at $2.50 unless your household actively prefers a branded loaf; on a loaf a week, a $1.50 branded premium is about $78 a year.
Freeze half the loaf on day one if the tail usually goes stale. Waste is the hidden bread price.
Check bread against our weekly tracker. We reprice the standard loaf every week.
