Beef deserves its own page because it is the standout mover in Canadian grocery prices this year, and it is likely the single item doing the most damage to your grocery bill.
The prices we verified in BC
Real Canadian Superstore, regular price, October 19, 2026: Butcher's Choice lean ground beef, club pack, $18.72 per kilogram ($8.49 per pound). A smaller 450 g pack was $9.00, which is $20 per kilogram. The small pack costs about $1.28 more per kilogram than the club pack.
Save-On-Foods flyer, October 15 to 21, 2026: lean ground beef, fresh value pack, $6.49 per pound. That is about $14.31 per kilogram, roughly $4.41 less per kilogram than the Superstore regular price.
What the national numbers say
Statistics Canada reported that prices for fresh or frozen beef rose 8.7% year over year in September 2026. That was slower than August's 11.0% increase, but still the fastest-rising major grocery item in the country.
Canada's Food Price Report 2026, from Dalhousie University and partner universities, forecast meat prices to rise 5% to 7% in 2026, the largest increase of any food category. Beef is tracking at the top of that forecast range.
Context matters here: overall food prices rose only 1.7% year over year in September. Beef at 8.7% is rising about five times faster than the grocery average, which is why it dominates so many households' bill increases.
What is a good deal on ground beef?
Our guidance: for lean ground beef in BC, at or below $6.99 per pound (about $15.41 per kilogram) is a deal, and the $6.49 per pound in this week's Save-On-Foods flyer clears that bar. At or below $5.99 a pound, buy for the freezer without hesitation.
Ground beef freezes well for months, especially portioned flat in bags. The gap between the $8.49 regular price and the $6.49 flyer price is $2 a pound, which is $20 saved on a 10 pound stock-up.
Why beef costs so much right now
Cattle herds are slow to rebuild. Beef supply depends on herds that take years to expand, and years of high feed costs and drought conditions in ranching regions shrank the North American herd. Less supply against steady demand means higher prices at every step from the ranch to the shelf.
Ground beef also absorbs demand from every other beef cut getting expensive. As steaks and roasts climb, more shoppers trade down to ground beef, which pushes its price up too. It is the pressure valve for the whole beef case, and the pressure is high.
How to pay less for beef
Buy ground beef only on flyer weeks and freeze it portioned. Between the $8.49 regular price and regular flyer prices around $6.49 a pound, timing is worth about a quarter of your beef spend.
Compare per kilogram, and buy the club pack if you will freeze the extra. The 450 g convenience pack cost about $1.28 more per kilogram in our check.
Stretch it. Mixing ground beef with lentils, mushrooms or a second protein in dishes like chili, tacos and pasta sauce keeps the flavour while cutting the beef per serving. In a high-price year, this is the single most effective beef tactic.
