How Much Does Milk Cost in Australia?
Short answer: house-brand full-cream milk costs $1.75 for 1 litre, $3.40 for 2 litres and $4.95 for 3 litres at Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, following a September 2026 price cut reported by the Milk Value Portal. We verified the Coles 1L price of $1.75 directly on coles.com.au on October 19, 2026.
Milk in Australia is priced as a ladder: the bigger the bottle, the cheaper the litre, down to $1.65 a litre at 3L. The ABS says milk rose 5.3% in the year to August 2026, which makes the September shelf cut the most interesting milk story of the year.
The prices we verified
Coles Dairy Full Cream Milk 1L: $1.75, every day price, checked directly on October 19, 2026. The September 2026 tracker readings (Savings.com.au) put 2L house-brand milk at $3.40 at both Coles and Woolworths ($1.70 a litre).
The 3L price is $4.95 at all three chains ($1.65 a litre), reported by the Milk Value Portal on 24 September 2026 when the chains cut private-label milk, and independently corroborated by a price comparison published in mid-October 2026. Aldi's 2L was the one deviation, at $3.39.
Branded milk is the trap. Coles lists Pura Full Cream 3L on special this week at $6.00, down from $6.70. Even on special, that is $2.00 a litre against $1.65 a litre for the house brand in the same size. The special saves you 70 cents against Pura's own price and costs you $1.05 against the house bottle.
What is a good deal on milk?
Our guidance: the ladder is the deal. At 3L, $1.65 a litre is the benchmark; at 2L, $1.70; at 1L, $1.75. There is rarely a reason to pay more per litre than the ladder for standard full-cream milk.
If your household gets through 3L before it turns, the big bottle saves about 10 cents a litre against the 1L, roughly $19 a year on a litre a day. Small, real, and automatic.
Why milk prices move
The ABS milk class rose 5.3% in the year to August 2026, within dairy at 3.5%. That annual figure reflects earlier farmgate and processing rises. The September shelf cut went the other way: the chains competed the private-label price down, a reminder that the index and the shelf can disagree for months.
Milk is a known-value item in Australia, priced to be remembered. Expect the ladder to hold for long stretches and move everywhere at once when it moves.
How to pay less for milk
Buy the largest bottle you reliably finish. The ladder does the saving for you.
Treat branded milk specials with suspicion: compare per litre against the house brand in the same size, not against the brand's own was-price.
Check milk against our weekly tracker. We reprice the ladder every week.
