UK Staple Grocery Prices: Weekly Price Tracker
Updated October 19, 2026. Updated weekly.
This page tracks a fixed basket of 14 staple groceries in the United Kingdom: milk, eggs, butter, bread, chicken breast, beef mince, rice, potatoes, bananas, coffee, cheddar, yogurt, spaghetti, and onions. Same items, same sizes, checked every week, so the changes you see are real price changes and not a different basket.
Tesco gave us the nearest-complete basket this week. Sainsbury's own website blocks outside checking, so its prices come from a daily scrape of sainsburys.co.uk product pages made on the morning of October 19, 2026, and we label them that way. Online list prices can differ from your local shelf price.
The basket at Tesco, October 19, 2026
Milk, Tesco British Semi Skimmed, 4 pints (2.272L): £1.65, which is 73p a litre. Tesco flags it as Aldi Price Match.
Butter, Tesco British Salted Block Butter, 250g: £1.85 (£7.40/kg).
White bread, Tesco White Toastie Thick Sliced, 800g: £0.75. The branded Hovis Soft White 800g loaf is £1.25.
Chicken breast, Tesco British Chicken Breast Fillets, 1kg: £6.90 (£6.90/kg). Smaller packs cost more per kilo: the 650g pack works out at £7.54/kg.
Beef mince, Tesco Finest 5% Aberdeen Angus Steak Mince, 500g: £6.50 (£13.00/kg). This is Tesco's premium tier. We could not verify a standard-tier Tesco mince price today; see the note below.
Rice, Tesco Easy Cook Long Grain Rice, 1kg: £1.25.
Potatoes, Tesco All Rounder Potatoes, 2kg: £1.32 (£0.66/kg), and £0.99 at Clubcard Price this week.
Bananas: 90p/kg loose, sold at 16p each. A 5 pack is £0.78.
Coffee, Tesco Gold Instant Coffee, 200g: £2.65. Tesco's 200g coffee is instant, not ground; we could not verify a 200g ground coffee price at any supermarket this week.

Onions, Tesco Brown Onions, 1kg: £0.95.
Those 11 verified lines total £26.43. Three basket items are missing at Tesco: an own-label 12 pack of eggs (only premium 10 packs were listed, from £4.10), natural yogurt 500g, and own-label spaghetti 500g (Tesco Rigatoni 500g is £0.75 and branded Napolina Spaghetti 500g is £1.50).
The basket at Sainsbury's, October 19, 2026
Prices below are from the October 19, 2026 scrape of sainsburys.co.uk product pages; the site itself returned an access-denied error to our direct check.
Milk, Sainsbury's British Semi Skimmed, 2.27L (4 pints): £1.65 (73p a litre), the same as Tesco and Asda.
Eggs, Sainsbury's British Free Range Eggs Large, 12 pack: £3.35, and £3.00 at Nectar Price. Medium 12 pack: £2.95.
Butter, Sainsbury's British Butter Salted, 250g: £1.85 (£7.40/kg).
White bread: the own-label 800g loaf was not in today's scrape. Hovis Soft Medium Sliced White Bread 800g is £1.25.
Chicken breast, Sainsbury's British Fresh Chicken Breast Fillets, 1kg: £6.90 (£6.90/kg).
Potatoes, Sainsbury's White Potatoes, 2kg: £1.32 (£0.66/kg).
Bananas: 90p/kg loose, the same as Tesco.
Cheddar, Cathedral City Mature Cheddar, 350g: £3.75 (£10.71/kg). Sainsbury's own British Mature Cheddar 400g is £2.95 (£7.38/kg).
Coffee, Sainsbury's Gold Roast Instant Coffee, 200g: £2.65. A ground coffee was verified here: Taste the Difference Fairtrade Ground Coffee, 227g, at £4.50.
Onions, Sainsbury's Onions, 1kg: £0.95, and £0.80 at Nectar Price.
Pasta: Sainsbury's Italian Rigatoni 500g is £0.69. Own-label spaghetti 500g was not verified.
The nine Sainsbury's lines in the basket format (milk, eggs, butter, bread, chicken, potatoes, cheddar, onions, coffee) total £23.67. Missing: beef mince and long-grain rice (only basmati at £1.79 was listed). Natural yogurt 500g could only be verified through a Sainsbury's Local delivery listing at £1.70, which may carry convenience-store pricing, so we do not count it in the basket.
The basket at Asda and Aldi, October 19, 2026
Asda (milk price confirmed on asda.com directly, the rest from the October 19 scrape of asda.com): milk 4 pints £1.65; free range medium eggs 12 pack £2.95 (large £3.30); salted butter 250g £1.85; chicken breast fillets £7.00/kg; Maris Piper potatoes 2kg £1.80; 6 bananas £0.94; British Extra Mature Cheddar 400g £2.95; spaghetti 500g £0.75; brown onions 1kg £0.98. Not verified at Asda today: own-label white bread 800g, beef mince, long-grain rice, natural yogurt, and own-label coffee.
Aldi (from the October 19 scrape of aldi.co.uk): salted butter 250g £1.85; Village Bakery medium sliced white bread 800g £0.55, the cheapest 800g loaf we verified anywhere this week; Everyday Essentials chicken breast fillets £4.25/kg, far below the big supermarkets, with the standard Ashfields tier at £7.22/kg in the 650g pack; Cathedral City Mature Cheddar 350g £2.99 (own-label Emporium 400g £2.45); Barissimo instant coffee 200g £2.65; basmati rice 1kg £1.79 (long-grain not verified); Cucina spaghetti £0.75; bananas 5 pack £0.78; brown onions 1kg £0.95, or 80p for the wonky 1kg bag; free range eggs sold in 6 packs at £0.99 and £1.69. Not verified at Aldi today: fresh milk 4 pints, a 12 pack of eggs, beef mince, potatoes 2kg, and natural yogurt.
Morrisons: we could not open a single morrisons.com product price today, and Morrisons had no prices in this week's scrape. Rather than guess, we publish nothing for Morrisons this week and will keep trying.
Same item, different price this week
Milk is a three-way tie: £1.65 for 4 pints at Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. When every big supermarket charges the same price for milk, the saving moves to the rest of the basket.
Butter is a four-way tie: £1.85 for 250g at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Aldi, £7.40/kg everywhere. Branded butter costs more per kilo even on offer: Kerrygold 200g is £1.90 at Clubcard Price this week, which is £9.50/kg.
Chicken breast is where the real gap is: £4.25/kg for Aldi's Everyday Essentials tier against £6.90/kg at Tesco and Sainsbury's and £7.00/kg at Asda. On a kilo a week, that gap is about £140 a year, though the tiers are not identical products.
Bread: Aldi's 800g loaf at £0.55 undercuts Tesco's own-label at £0.75, and both are well under the £1.25 branded Hovis loaf sold at Tesco and Sainsbury's.
How we collect these prices
Prices checked Monday, October 19, 2026. Tesco and Asda milk prices were confirmed on the retailers' own product pages. The remaining prices come from a daily scrape of retailer product pages (tesco.com, sainsburys.co.uk, asda.com, aldi.co.uk) made that morning, because Sainsbury's blocks direct outside checking with an access-denied error. Loyalty prices (Clubcard Price, Nectar Price) are always labeled and never counted as the shelf price.
The basket never changes size or item to make a week look better. If an item cannot be verified, we say so on this page. This week that was standard beef mince at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Aldi, ground coffee 200g everywhere, and Morrisons entirely.
National context: the ONS food and non-alcoholic beverages index rose 1.3% year over year in August 2026. This tracker shows the shelf-level version of that story.
