Grocery Prices in the UK: Tracker, Reports & What Things Cost

This page is the home of our United Kingdom grocery price coverage. Everything here is built from UK sources: the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Consumer Price Index, retailer online listings from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Aldi, and current supermarket offers.

The latest headline: ONS food and non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 1.3% in the 12 months to September 2026, unchanged from August, while overall UK inflation jumped to 3.5%, its highest since October 2025. The pain is at the pump, not the checkout: the headline rise was driven by transport and fuel, not food. Inside the food basket, fish is up 11.4% year over year while butter, pizza and cheese are cheaper than a year ago.

Our first UK shelf check, on October 19, 2026, priced six identical staples at three supermarkets: Tesco £15.12, Sainsbury's £15.62 and Asda £16.23. The full tracker explains the basket, the loyalty prices that change those totals, and the items we could not verify.

Start here: the tracker and the monthly report

The UK Staple Grocery Prices tracker is the living page: a fixed basket of 14 staples checked every week against retailer online listings, with Clubcard and Nectar prices labeled as loyalty prices. The UK Grocery Price Report is the monthly companion: each ONS release explained item by item.

The September 2026 report covers food inflation holding at 1.3% while headline inflation jumped to 3.5% on fuel, fish up 11.4% year over year, and butter, pizza and cheese all cheaper than a year ago. The August 2026 report is still available in the archive below.

What individual staples cost

Each staple has its own guide with the prices we verified, what counts as a good deal, why the price moves, and how to pay less: eggs, milk, butter, bread, chicken, beef mince, coffee, bananas, cheese, and potatoes. Every guide is linked below.

Deals and store comparisons

UK Supermarket Deals Watch rounds up the best verified offers live this week, including Clubcard Prices, Nectar Prices and Asda Rollbacks, with stock-up or skip verdicts. The store comparison prices six identical staples at Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda, then reports what we could and could not verify at Aldi and Morrisons.

We also publish Canada, United States and Australia hubs built on the same system, and a same-basket comparison across all four countries.

How we check UK prices

Regular prices come from retailer online listings checked on the date shown. Sainsbury's own site blocks outside checking, so its prices here come from a daily scrape of sainsburys.co.uk product pages, labeled as such on the tracker page. Online list prices can differ from the shelf price at your local store.

If a price cannot be verified, we say so on the page instead of filling the gap. That happened this week with standard beef mince at most supermarkets, ground coffee, and everything at Morrisons, whose prices we could not open at all.
