How Much Do Potatoes Cost in the UK?

Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a 2kg bag of white potatoes cost £1.32 at Tesco and Sainsbury's, which is 66p a kilo, and £1.80 at Asda for its Maris Piper bag, which is 90p a kilo. Tesco has the same 2kg bag at 99p on Clubcard Price this week.

Potatoes are the cheapest calories in the basket and the gap between stores is proportionally huge: Asda's bag costs 36% more per kilo than the Tesco and Sainsbury's bags.

The prices we verified

Tesco All Rounder Potatoes 2kg: £1.32 (£0.66/kg), and £0.99 at Clubcard Price (£0.495/kg). Sainsbury's White Potatoes 2kg: £1.32 (£0.66/kg). Asda Light and Fluffy Maris Piper Potatoes 2kg: £1.80 (£0.90/kg).

Aldi's 2kg potato bag could not be verified this week, so Aldi gets no line here rather than a guessed one. Variety matters a little: Asda's bag is Maris Piper, a named variety, against all-rounder whites at Tesco and Sainsbury's, but a 24p per kilo premium for the variety is a choice to make consciously.

What is a good deal on potatoes?

Our guidance: 66p/kg is the going rate and anything at or below 55p/kg is a stock-up price. Tesco's 99p Clubcard bag, at 49.5p/kg, is exactly that, and potatoes keep for weeks in a cool dark place, so the stock-up is low-risk.

Loose baking potatoes and premium varieties routinely exceed £1.50/kg. For mash, roast and chips, the 2kg all-rounder bag is the value format.

Why potato prices move

Potatoes sit in the ONS vegetables class, which rose 2.1% in the year to August 2026 and jumped 1.6% in August alone, the largest monthly rise of any food class that month. The ONS specifically notes vegetable prices rose more this August than a year ago.

Weather and harvest timing drive that: a wet or late harvest tightens supply into the autumn. If the monthly pace continues, the 66p/kg anchor is the price most likely to move in our tracker this winter.

How to pay less for potatoes

Buy the 2kg bag at 66p/kg as the default and treat named varieties as an upgrade, not a default.

Take the Clubcard price when it appears: 99p a bag is the cheapest verified potato price in the UK this week.
