How Much Does Milk Cost in the UK?
Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a 4 pint bottle (2.27 litres) of semi-skimmed milk cost £1.65 at Tesco, £1.65 at Sainsbury's and £1.65 at Asda. That is 73p a litre, identical at all three.
Milk is the most price-matched product in British supermarkets. Tesco even labels its 4 pints as Aldi Price Match. Knowing that frees you to ignore milk when choosing where to shop, and to watch the places milk money actually leaks: branded and filtered versions.
The prices we verified
Tesco British Semi Skimmed Milk, 2.272L: £1.65, confirmed on tesco.com directly. Sainsbury's British Semi Skimmed Milk, 2.27L: £1.65. Asda British Milk Semi Skimmed, 4 pints: £1.65, confirmed on asda.com directly, at 72.6p a litre.
Aldi's fresh 4 pint price could not be verified this week (only its UHT lines were listed), but Tesco's Aldi Price Match label on this exact product tells you where the price is anchored.
The premium versions cost far more per litre. Filtered milk is the common upgrade: Cravendale 2L bottles are £2.65 at Tesco this week, which is £1.33 a litre, close to double the standard price, offered at 2 for £4 on Clubcard.
What is a good deal on milk?
Our guidance: £1.65 for 4 pints is the price. There is no deal to hunt on standard semi-skimmed, because the supermarkets have already competed it to a tie. Paying more than 73p a litre means you are buying a different product: filtered, organic, or a convenience-size bottle.
The small bottles are the quiet leak. A 1 pint or 1 litre top-up bottle at a convenience store routinely costs well over £1 a litre. The fix is sizing the big shop correctly, not hunting milk offers.
Why milk prices move
The ONS class that includes milk (milk, cheese and eggs) fell 0.2% in the year to August 2026, so dairy shelf prices are broadly flat. Milk is priced as a known-value item: supermarkets treat it as a headline price shoppers remember, and they match each other ruthlessly.
That is why a litre of milk costs the same in three competing chains. Expect the 4 pint price to move rarely, and to move everywhere at once when it does.
How to pay less for milk
Buy the 4 pint size if you get through it. The per-litre price of small bottles is where milk budgets leak.
Do not choose your supermarket for milk. Choose it for the rest of the basket; our store comparison shows potatoes, chicken and cheese deciding the gap this week.
Check milk against our weekly tracker. When the tied price eventually moves, we will catch it the week it happens.
