How Much Do Eggs Cost in the UK?

Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a dozen large free range eggs cost £3.35 at Sainsbury's, reduced to £3.00 at Nectar Price, and £3.30 at Asda. A dozen medium free range eggs cost £2.95 at both Sainsbury's and Asda.

Eggs are sold in a tangle of pack sizes in the UK, 6, 10, 12 and 15 packs, free range, barn and enriched cage, so the only honest comparison is per egg. Here is what we verified, converted.

The prices we verified

Sainsbury's British Free Range Eggs, large, 12 pack: £3.35 shelf price, 28p an egg, and £3.00 at Nectar Price, 25p an egg. The medium 12 pack is £2.95, about 25p an egg at shelf price.

Asda 12 Free Range Medium Eggs: £2.95, about 25p an egg. Asda large free range 12 pack: £3.30, about 28p an egg.

Aldi sells free range eggs in 6 packs: Merevale Free Range at £0.99 (about 17p an egg) and British Large Free Range at £1.69 (about 28p an egg). Tesco's own-label 12 pack could not be verified this week; its listed egg offers were premium 10 packs, Freshlay Golden Yolks at £4.10 (41p an egg) and Clarence Court Burford Brown at £5.75, or £5.15 at Clubcard Price.

What is a good deal on eggs?

Our guidance: at or below 25p an egg for free range is a good price, and the Nectar dozen at £3.00 and both £2.95 medium dozens sit exactly there. Below 20p an egg, which the small Aldi Merevale pack achieves, is stock-up territory, though 6 packs are rarely the best way to buy a lot of eggs.

Premium eggs are a different product category: at 41p to 58p an egg, the speciality 10 packs cost roughly double the standard free range dozen per egg. Buy them for the taste if you value it, not as a staple.

Why egg prices move

The ONS groups milk, cheese and eggs together: that class fell 0.2% in the year to August 2026, so egg prices nationally are roughly flat to slightly down, with none of the drama seen in the US market in recent years.

The bigger driver of what you pay is pack architecture. Retailers compete on the 12 pack free range line, which is why it clusters at £2.95 to £3.35, while small packs and premium brands carry much higher per-egg prices.

How to pay less for eggs

Compare per egg, not per pack. A £2.95 medium dozen beats a £1.69 large 6 pack on value for most cooking, even though the 6 pack looks cheaper on the shelf edge.

Use the loyalty price when it exists: the Nectar dozen at £3.00 is the cheapest verified large free range dozen this week.
