How Much Does Butter Cost in the UK?

Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a 250g block of own-label salted butter cost £1.85 at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Aldi. All four charge exactly the same: £7.40 a kilo.

Butter is the second three-way (here, four-way) tie in the basket after milk. The interesting prices are the branded ones, and the offers on them, which look like deals and usually are not.

The prices we verified

Tesco British Salted Block Butter 250g: £1.85. Sainsbury's British Butter Salted 250g: £1.85. Asda British Salted Butter 250g: £1.85. Aldi Cowbelle British Salted Butter 250g: £1.85. Every price is £7.40/kg.

Branded butter runs higher per kilo. Kerrygold Pure Irish Salted Butter 200g is £2.65 at Tesco this week, which is £13.25/kg, nearly double the own-label rate. Even at its Clubcard Price of £1.90, it is £9.50/kg, still well above £7.40/kg.

What is a good deal on butter?

Our guidance: £7.40/kg is the going rate, and any block at or below £7.00/kg is a genuine deal worth stocking, because butter freezes well for months. That means a 250g block at £1.75 or less, which the big supermarkets rarely offer on own-label lines.

Judge branded offers per kilo, not by the size of the discount. A third off Kerrygold still leaves it more expensive than the full-price own-label block next to it.

Why butter prices move

Butter sits in the ONS oils and fats class, which fell 2.8% in the year to August 2026, the largest fall of any food class. Butter and spread prices have been easing as the dairy commodity spike of recent years unwinds.

Shelf prices move more slowly than the index, and the £1.85 tie suggests the supermarkets are holding the line price while the category deflates. If the ONS trend continues, this is a price to watch for a cut in the tracker.

How to pay less for butter

Default to the own-label block at £7.40/kg and buy branded butter on purpose, as a flavour choice, not by habit.

Freeze a spare block when you spot a sub-£7.00/kg price. Butter is one of the safest freezer stock-ups in the store.

Check butter against our weekly tracker. We reprice this item every week at all four supermarkets.
