How Much Does Coffee Cost in the UK?

Short answer: on October 19, 2026, a 200g jar of own-label instant coffee cost £2.65 at Tesco, Sainsbury's and Aldi alike (£13.25 a kilo). The one standard ground coffee we verified, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Fairtrade Ground Coffee, 227g, cost £4.50 (£19.82 a kilo).

A transparency note first: we set out to price a standard 200g bag of ground coffee at each supermarket and could not verify one anywhere this week. Rather than fill the gap, this guide prices what exists: instant as the like-for-like staple, ground as the premium tier.

The prices we verified

Tesco Gold Instant Coffee 200g: £2.65. Sainsbury's Gold Roast Instant Coffee 200g: £2.65. Aldi Barissimo Instant Coffee 200g: £2.65. Three chains, one price, £13.25/kg.

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Fairtrade Peruvian Ground Coffee, 227g: £4.50 (£19.82/kg), the only verified ground coffee in this week's check.

Branded instant shows the week's best coffee deal: Nescafé Azera Americano 90g is £3.50 at Nectar Price at Sainsbury's against a £7.25 shelf price. At Asda, Nescafé Original 300g is on Rollback at £6.00, down from £7.25 (£20.00/kg).

What is a good deal on coffee?

Our guidance: for instant, £13.25/kg is the going rate and anything under £11/kg is a stock-up price. The Azera Nectar offer works out at £38.89/kg, which sounds absurd until you remember it is a premium freeze-dried line whose shelf price is £80.56/kg; judge it against other premium instants, not against own-label.

For ground coffee, the verified anchor is £19.82/kg for a premium own-label bag. Standard ground coffee should cost less than that per kilo; if a 200g bag is priced above £4.00, you are paying premium-tier money.

Why coffee prices move

The ONS coffee, tea and cocoa class fell 0.2% in the year to August 2026, so UK coffee shelf prices are broadly flat after the global coffee spike worked through the system.

The contrast with the US is sharp: there, coffee rose 7.1% year over year in September 2026 (BLS). Same global beans, different retail timing. Our US coffee guide covers that market.

How to pay less for coffee

Work out your cost per kilo once. Coffee is sold in 90g, 200g, 227g and 300g formats precisely so the comparison is annoying; the per-kilo figure cuts through all of it.

Premium instant is a loyalty-offer product. The Azera pattern (shelf price high, Nectar price less than half) repeats across the year, so never pay the shelf price for it.

Check coffee against our weekly tracker. We reprice the 200g instant at three chains every week and flag the branded offers.

Coffee formats are designed to confuse the comparison. Your receipts are not: scan them free (5 scans a month, no credit card) and see your real per-kilo coffee price.
